Creating Promise, Igniting Potential
Frequently Asked Questions

Holistic revitalization is a strategic, comprehensive, long-term approach to solving entrenched community problems and breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty. It addresses community issues in education, housing, job opportunities, transportation and other critical areas to combat the multiple forces that keep families in poverty.

Revitalization efforts that focus on one issue – say education or housing – have proven to be less effective than initiatives that systematically address all of the ingredients needed for healthy communities. Research in East Lake and other successful communities show that a holistic approach:

• Reduces crime
• Boosts employment
• Builds student achievement
• Fosters community involvement and pride
• Provides economic benefits – home values rise and tax bases increase
• Improves the quality of life for the entire area

Purpose Built Communities seeks to ensure that children of all incomes and backgrounds, especially those from low-income backgrounds, receive an excellent education within their community and its partnerships, from infancy through college. We have found that there is almost always a need (and an opportunity) to improve education within a community. We have seen that education helps families advance further, faster, and we believe education is one of the central pillars of any holistic revitalization program.

Our primary goal is to advance the work of our Network Members through the expertise we offers, not financial support. Purpose Built Communities provides Network Members with coaching and technical assistance that improves the speed and effectiveness of their work. "I feel fortunate to have taught in a school that was part of a holistic model, with a community support system focused on educational achievement. There is a powerful forward momentum because of the unified neighborhood vision."
